Report to the Yorkshire County Battalion

As part of our membership of the Yorkshire County Battalion, we submit a report each year about what the Company has been up to over the session. Please find the report detailed below:

5
th Scarborough Company

This session has been an amazing one for the 5th Scarborough Company, being our first session as a company in our own right. The session began with all the excitement of our registration as 5th Scarborough, the move to our new home at Queen Street Methodist Central Hall and the introduction of our new Chaplain Rev. Geoff Bowell.

The Anchor Boys have had a very busy and fun filled session, growing in numbers through a recruitment campaign with twenty two lads now regularly attending. They have learned all about the creation story and many of the important stories from the first few books of the bible. The Anchors fill their programme with lots of fun through games, crafts and worship.

The Junior Section have had a very successful year beginning with our annual holiday at Whitley Bay Boys Club enjoying visits to the Life museum in Newcastle and the Blue Reef Aquarium at Tynemouth. They enjoyed a very successful day at the Sports Competitions, winning the 5-a-side football competition and coming 2nd in the team games. In the worship sessions they have been learning all about Old Testament heroes and then moved on to the Easter Story in the build up to the uniformed competitions. At the uniformed competitions the Juniors won the overall Christian Faith competition, came 2nd place in the Figure Marching Competition, and 3rd in General Knowledge. The Juniors have also benefited through the recruitment campaign growing in numbers to thirteen and with seven Anchor Boys due to be promoted soon, next session is looking like a busy one.

The Company Section have a regular attendance of nine members and have been very busy working towards credits in international, camping, crafts, drill, sportsman, crime prevention and Christian Faith. Through our weekly devotions sessions, we have explored many aspects of the Christian Faith with the help of our Chaplain, Rev. Geoff, as he likes to be called. The lads enjoyed the District Fun Day in Hull in October, enjoying both the challenges and the bowling. At the Sports Competitions in November, they won the 5-a-side football, and came 2nd in the Team event at the Table Tennis Competition. Along with the Seniors, they came 2nd in the Drill competition at the Uniformed Competitions. They are now looking forward to our Summer programme including our annual holiday in May to Green Moor Activity Centre.

The Seniors of the Company have been the busiest of all during a very successful session. The lads had a very busy summer, with trips to Firm Foundations and the Hull and East Yorkshire Battalion’s Challenge Hike, which they won!! The session started relatively quietly for the Seniors but they were soon very busy, with many of them helping out on the Junior Section Holiday in September. In November we ran a Seniors weekend in London, on remembrance weekend, visiting the Lord Mayor’s Show and watching the remembrance parade. They also went on the London Eye, caught a glimpse of The Queen and visited London Bridge as well as taking in all the sights.

All 6 Seniors are working hard towards the Queen’s Badge with three of them set to complete the award later this month. Two of them have also been on the Queen’s Badge Leadership Course this session. The Seniors are also busy training up the two, soon to be Seniors from the Company Section who are currently involved in most Seniors activities. They have a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition coming up in two weeks and are all looking forward to this years Firm Foundations Festival.

The lads most proud moment of the year was their success in the Battalion Christian Faith competition, finishing in 1st place overall. They really went to town on the project writing a song to the music of Whistle for the Choir by the Frattellis and made a music video to go with it, which can be viewed on our website at www.bbzone.co.uk/5th. They were very proud of this project as were all the staff and the people of our Church.

As a whole the Company has enjoyed a fabulous first year, with the highlight being the Service of dedication of our Company Colours. The service was attended by representatives of both the District and Battalion and was a great success. Thanks to all who attended!! The year was capped off at the Uniformed Competitions with winning the Battalion Challenge Shield, an achievement all at 5th are very proud of.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Staff and Boys of the 5th Scarborough Company to say thank you for all of your support in our first year as a Company in our own right and to invite you to our first display on 17th May at 7-00pm.
