Our Seniors have tonight been at a civic reception at Scarborough Town Hall meeting the Mayor of the borough Mrs Janet Jefferson.

It was a lovely evening which was to celebrate the achievements of the Seniors and in particular their representing the Brigade at the Remembrance Day festivities in London last November.

The lads were taken on a guided tour of the Town Hall and were congratulated for their efforts over the past year.

Annual Display and Presentation Evening

Our annual display and presentation evening took place on Thursday Evening, 1st May, and was a great success. There were approximately 120 people present at the event to see the lads demonstrate the things they get up to at BB each week. There was also an interesting edition of Family Fortunes provided by our Seniors and of course the lads received the awards they have been working hard towards all year.

Star of the show was undoubtedly newly promoted Sergeant Chris Sedgwick receive his Queen's Badge, the highest award available in The Boys' Brigade. Chris has worked very hard attaining this award , working for two years in leadership within the Company, volunteering at St. Catherine's Hospice, learning the Bass Guitar and following a fitness programme in attending a gym. As well as this Chris had to complete a record of his work towards the badge which included a project on an international aid agency.

It was a fantastic evening enjoyed by all and all at the Company would like to thank those who attended for their support.

Company Report

The 2007/08 session has been another busy session for the 5th Scarborough Company. The session began with excellent numbers returning in each section, also welcoming new and some returning members back to the Company.

We ended the 2006/07 session with a farewell service for Chris Bairstow, and also were delighted to present three of our young men with their Queen’s Badge as part of the service.

The Anchor Boys have had a busy and action packed session. They currently have 15 regular members, with 9 of these due to join the Junior Section at the end of this session. Due to the large number moving up to Junior Section, we are currently recruiting new members. During this session they have been learning about friendship. The Anchors fill their programme with lots of fun through games, crafts and worship.

Just before Christmas, the Anchors visited the Scarborough miniature railway for the Father Christmas Express, where they were also treated to a trip around the train shed and sit on the engines by Sergeant Stephen Johnson, an employee of the railway.

The Junior Section has had an exciting and successful session, beginning with their annual holiday to Green Moor, enjoying trips to Magna Science Museum, and The National Coal Mining Museum. The Juniors have had a successful year with competitions coming 2nd in the 5 a side football competition and 2nd in the Christian Faith knowledge. The highlight was winning the Figure Marching competition, under the teaching and guidance of Corporal Chris Sedgwick. The worship sessions this year have mainly focused on learning and using sign language to write and sign prayers and studying the passages for the Christian Faith competition. The Junior Section currently has 13 members, with three of these members due to move into The Company Section at this years annual display.

The Company Section has a regular attendance of ten members and the lads have been busy exploring the new Company Section badge scheme. We have continued through our weekly devotional sessions to focus on many aspects of the Christian Faith, and have enjoyed working on the Christian Faith passages and project for this years competition. At this years competitions in November the Company Section gained 3rd place in both the football and cross county competitions, followed by joint 1st place with 1st Acomb in the Table Tennis competition in February. At this years uniformed competitions, they gained 2nd place both the Christian Faith knowledge and project, gaining 2nd place overall in the competition. Along with the Seniors they also gained 2nd place in the Drill Competition.

This August will see the Company Section and Seniors attend their 1st week long camp to The Well Road Centre in Moffat, Scotland.

Once again the Seniors have had another busy session, on both company nights and other events. Currently we have ten Seniors. The Summer saw them involved in trips once again to Firm Foundations and the Hull and East Yorkshire Battalion Challenge Hike, which the lads successfully won for the second time. The beginning of this session saw the lads involved in the Founder’s Day event, which was hosted at the company headquarters.

The highlight of the session for the Seniors was a trip to London for Remembrance Sunday where they made up part of The Boys’ Brigade contingent in the parade. This was a very thought provoking and moving weekend through which the Seniors learnt a great amount of the importance of this weekend to our county and we thank the Battalion for both the financial support and your thoughts and prayers about our weekend.

During the Session, we have continued to develop the leadership throughout the Seniors. 4 of the Seniors are currently working hard on their Queen’s Badges, with 1 completing this year. We also sent 2 of our Sergeants to develop their leadership skills through the national Brigade training, KGVI training at Feldon Lodge. They also all continue to work on their Duke of Edinburgh awards. The Seniors also took the responsibility of planning and running a company evening, which enabled them to experience the roles and responsibilities which officers have especially sorting out some particularly naughty Staff!!!!!.

The beginning of the session saw the official launch of the Company’s Worship Band, The Fifth Revelation, which as well as playing for Church Parade’s, have played for the 1st Market Weighton Company’s 25th Anniversary service and the Hull and East Yorkshire Battalion’s Grade III leadership service.

As a company, my first year as Captain of the Company has been a fabulous year in charge. The year also brings changes, as Kirsty and I prepare for the birth of our first child, which has been met by fantastic support by the lads and parents of the company.

We will be holding our annual display on Thursday 1st May, with Colin Preston, being our chief guest.
